Peter Hulsmans in I see, I see, I see…

An exhibition as a riddle, that is the least one can say about Ik Zie Ik Zie Ik Zie Watjijnietziet – I See I See I See Whatyoudon’tsee – the left-out spacing of the last part of the title intended. As curator Lieve Segers describes it the exhibition is …a game in which one has to guess an object that one of the players has in mind and that is visibly present for all players. The only characteristic the player gives is its colour. …the exhibition not only lets the viewer search… Read More

Peter Hulsmans and Maria Gabriëlle in “&”

The work of Peter Hulsmans investigates the relation with the viewer. It wants to make the elusive elements in this relationship, such as emotions and thoughts, visible. Hulsmans plays consciously with our viewing behaviour and anticipates in an explicit way how the viewer will respond. At the same time the work can be described, according to literary scholar Noël Reumkens as holding back, evasive, scarce, and fragile. Reumkens uses the phrase ‘lessness’ as the work seems to explicitly lack something. Not only in a semantic way but literally, namely physical weight. This… Read More

Peter Hulsmans in Open Systems and catalogue Locale

During the upcoming Antwerp Art Weekend Peter Hulsmans takes part in the group show Open Systems at Gallery 146. Open Systems presents a range of practices which draw on the conceptual, procedural and material emphasis of non-objective painting and on the conventions of painting as object, formalist minimalism and process based conceptualism. Space as concept and as material is invoked in an eliding of the representational in favour of engagements with conceptual spaces for making. These are negotiations between the idea of space and the experience of space, that is, representations of… Read More

Peter Hulsmans: Locale

Making visible what is elusive, such as emotions and thoughts, is an important driver for Peter Hulsmans. This specific interest results in self-contained installations, sculptures and objects. Hulsmans often departs from personal experiences that are translated into a generally valid image. What remains are concrete objects and situations. This new reality comes alive through the interaction between viewer and objects and/or the situation at hand. For ‘The Cage’, a large, high space at the heart of the main building of PXL-MAD School of Arts where he teaches, Hulsmans developed an installation with completely new… Read More
