Hester Doove – Music Portraits, crowd funding campaign

My sister Hester Doove is a Dutch photographer specialised in portraits. From 1989 to 2001 she portrayed a lot of international pop artists, amongst others for the Dutch music magazine OOR. It usually was quite a challenge to make these photos, in a very limited amount of time, backstage or in and around hotels. But exactly those limiting circumstances as well as the always very special encounters with these artists were the major driver and creative inspiration to make the unique portraits for which she’s well-known.

The photos at the time were unfortunately printed on bad quality magazine paper and Hester now wants to make a beautiful book with a selection of 60 of these portraits. For this she has set up a crowd funding campaign. About 2,5 years ago she started brain storming and collaborating with designer Jan van Mechelen of ZEE graphic design & typography. The book will be published in English on 160 pages, format 22 x 26 cm and a preface by Dutch music journalist Leo Blokhuis.

The book will include portraits by Seal, Barry White, Elvis Costello, Marianne Faithfull, Tori Amos, J.J.Cale, John Hiatt, Suzanne Vega, Joe Jackson, David Byrne, Lenny Kravitz, Susanna Hoffs, Robbie Robertson, Lisa Stansfield, Chris Isaak, Sonic Youth, Youssou N’Dour and Thom Yorke.

Hester also worked with Maurice Rijnen of Plusworks for the lithography, Lecturis – publishing for the distribution and Opmeer – for CO2 neutral printing!
Eric van Nimwegen of Clip Cowboys made the crowdfunding movie.

Please visit Music Portraits 1989-2001 by Hester Doove and support this great project. So far, the campaign has been quite successful, and Hester was awarded partial funding by the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts. But there’s still some work to be done in the upcoming three weeks.
