The Research Group, an artists collective 1967-1972

The exhibition De Research Group – een kunstenaars collectief 1967-1972 ran from 21.09.24 – 05.01.2025 at Het Stadsmus, Guido Gezellestraat 2, 3500 Hasselt, Belgium.

Made in collaboration with scenographer Jo Klaps and graphic designer Geoffrey Brusatto, it showed an extensive overview of the artists group’s work in an explicitly non-linear way.

Specific about the group was that it consisted of five art students, based in and around Hasselt – Jos Jans, Hugo Duchateau, Jan Withofs, Dré Sprankenis and Hélène Keil who asked their teacher Vincent Van den Meersch to join them. During the five years the group existed they had numerous shows throughout Belgium and were an important way to get their home province of Limburg known as an artistic hub. But their work was also shown in the Netherlands, Germany, Poland and Great-Britain. The group’s unofficial seventh member, Kees Graaf, was responsible for the production of their graphic work. Their maps with silkscreen prints were a very successful way of promoting their work and formed an important part of this exhibition.

The show included a collaboration with Sara Bomans and her students around artists studio’s, including those of Hugo Duchateau and Jan Withofs. The School performed at the opening. The show was accompanied by a book that’s still available at Het Stadsmus.
