Driftingspace – Textually Active 5

For their 5th Textally Active project ‘We Can Do IT – A Code for Plymouth’ Driftingspace are calling out for manifestos and proposals. The full text of their call reads as follows: Is there a code for the ideal city? How do we create it? Is such a thing as the ideal city even possible? Is your Utopia my Dystopia? Is my playground your prison? What is democratic space? In your city, where is the Underbelly?  The Salacious? The Salubrious? Where is Toytown Green? The Docks? Where is the Knowledge? Financial Row? This… Read More

Des Concerts Filmés by Jérôme Joy

Very excited to be working on the coordination of the project ‘Concerts Filmés’ (Filmed Concerts) by Jérôme Joy. Joy is a composer who has been active on the international scene of experimental music (electronic, improvised, instrumental and networked) since the beginning of the 1980s. For this project Joy selects locations in and around Saint-Nazaire that normally are improbable or unlikely to be used for music but that are chosen for their specific acoustics for which he creates new compositions. The concerts are performed without an audience but are filmed to give access to locations… Read More

Big finds

According to Jérôme Joy, with whom I toured the harbour to visit locations for future art projects, Saint-Nazaire has the tendency to make big things. An early example is the ‘hydravion Richard-Penhoët‘of which only one prototype was build and that had five motors of 420 hp . Today it are the enormous cruise ships and wind turbines of which a floating prototype has been developed. But during our trip we also encountered some intriguing big ‘sculptures’.

Saint-Nazaire impressions & conversations

Exploring the city, discovering a rich history, and great tastes – yes that is a golden pecan and it is just from the everyday bakery around the corner.

Slow-Move

The first part of ‘Slow-Move’, an art project by Edith Doove and Dominique Leroy has been successfully completed. The first phase took place from 29-31 March 2018 between Plymouth and Saint-Nazaire via Roscoff. Bureau Doove has now landed in Saint-Nazaire where it will further develop the project. The results, amongst others a sound installation by Dominique Leroy, will be presented later this spring. Watch this space – to be continued.

AnneMarie Maes in Beehave

AnneMarie Maes participates with the installation Bee Agency and with the video Variation Games in Beehave, an exhibition curated by Martina Millà at Fundació Juan Miró, Barcelona. Where are the bees? The mass disappearance of honey bees in recent years has elicited a growing interest in urban beekeeping as a way to re-naturalise cities. The Beehave exhibition project curated by Martina Millà draws on this debate – also among contemporary artists – presenting installations and pieces in a range of different media by local and international artists who invite visitors to engage in sensorial experiences focused on a variety… Read More

Peter Hulsmans and Maria Gabriëlle in “&”

The work of Peter Hulsmans investigates the relation with the viewer. It wants to make the elusive elements in this relationship, such as emotions and thoughts, visible. Hulsmans plays consciously with our viewing behaviour and anticipates in an explicit way how the viewer will respond. At the same time the work can be described, according to literary scholar Noël Reumkens as holding back, evasive, scarce, and fragile. Reumkens uses the phrase ‘lessness’ as the work seems to explicitly lack something. Not only in a semantic way but literally, namely physical weight. This… Read More

Dominique Leroy in Under the Sand at Le Lieu Unique

Dominique Leroy currently takes part in the residency ‘Avant la poussière/Before the Dust’ together with Jef Rolez at Le Lieu Unique, Nantes. The residency is the fourth in a series organized by the project ‘Under the Sand’. The first three took place in Gafsa, Tunisia, well-known for its phosphate mining industry. ‘Under the Sand’ was initiated by Wilfried Nail in collaboration with Souad Mani and promotes transdisciplinary and international meetings between artists over a period of three years (2016-19). It wants to valorize the area of Gafsa close to the Tunisian desert… Read More
